What is my BMI?

BMI stands for Body Mass Index and is a measure of your body fat based on your weight in relation to your height and applies to most adults.

The BMI calculation divides weight by height, which gives a figure. For adults, an ideal BMI is between 18.5-24.9.

Here’s an overview of what your score may mean:

A score below 18.5

This means you are classed as underweight.

Between 18.5-24.9

You are a healthy weight if your BMI comes in between 18.5-24.9.

Between 25-29.9

You are classed as overweight if your BMI is over 25 and under 30

A score over 30

Any BMI over 30 is classified as obese.

Accuracy of BMI

Healthcare professionals will take other factors into account to assess your weight. Your BMI doesn’t take into account things like your body shape, how much muscle you have and even your ethnicity, which all play a part!

Why is waist size important?

Healthcare professionals will also measure the size of your waist. Your risk of some health problems are increased if you carry fat around your waist. If you are carrying too much fat around your middle, you can be at increased risk of conditions like:

  • heart disease
  • type 2 diabetes
  • cancer
