Men's Mental Health Consultation

Men are less likely to seek mental health support or get support when they are in a mental health crisis. Suicide is the biggest killer of males aged 5 – 49 years in England. In Sandwell 79% of deaths by suicide are men. We want to change this by raising awareness of men’s mental health and enable men to access support sooner.

As part of the Men’s Mental health campaign currently underway in Sandwell, a consultation took place from August- October 2024. The consultation aimed to gather views and ideas about improving men’s mental health, to help to shape future support for all men living & working in Sandwell.

The consultation covered the following:

  • What impacts on Men’s mental health

  • The barriers to men getting support

  • What stops men from talking about their mental health and asking for help

  • Where do men go for support for their mental health

  • What support and provision do men need and what does good look like

  • What can you do for look out for each other.  How can we improve our awareness of how to reduce the stigma of men’s mental health.

  • What can we put in place to start the conversation and reduce the stigma around men’s mental health

Overall, 234 respondents completed the individual survey and 25 respondents completed the organisation survey.

The responses to open-ended questions have been removed, so that individuals and organisations cannot be identified.
