The Special Olympics Sandwell group is to hold golf, table tennis and tennis training sessions at Portway Lifestyle Centre during term time for the next twelve months for adults and children with learning disabilities.
The team are able to provide the special sessions after receiving a town grant of £3,780 from Sandwell Council’s local town grants scheme.
There will be three sports that will be available to participants – golf, table tennis and tennis – at the sessions.
Councillor Lorraine Ashman, town chair for Rowley Regis, said: “This is a very worthwhile scheme which will give people with learning disabilities a chance to get involved in sporting activities.
“The grant will provide the admirable Special Olympics organisers the opportunity to get people involved in sports they cannot easily engage in at the moment.”
Norma Hyde, Chair of Sandwell Special Olympics, said: “We are very grateful to the town grants team for the help they are giving us to extend our sessions.
“It will enable more adults and children to visit Portway Lifestyle Centre and enjoy some activities that are not available to them at the moment.”
Participants will be provided with Special Olympic Sandwell t-shirts and have the opportunity to take part in competitions.
