Preventing Diabetes

Advice about how to reduce your risk of Type 2 diabetes and understand local programmes available.

There are two main types of diabetes:

Type 1 diabetes

Type 2 diabetes

They are different conditions, caused by different things, but they are both serious and need to be treated and managed properly. For more information on type 1 diabetes please visit NHS Choices.

Here in Sandwell we have a specific service that aims to reduce people’s risk of getting type 2 diabetes. The NHS diabetes prevention programme called “The Healthier You”  helps people make small changes to their lifestyles. You can find more information about this programme by clicking here, or emailing info@lwtcsupport.co.uk

Over three million people in England already have type 2 diabetes and more than five million people could have the disease by 2025!

There’s lots of support available in Sandwell to help people reduce their risk of getting the condition. Small changes to diet and lifestyle can have a massive impact in helping to prevent the development of type 2 diabetes.

The symptoms of type 2 diabetes aren’t always obvious, so it’s best to find out if you are at risk by having a simple blood test at your GP surgery or, if you are eligible, you can find out if you are at risk by having an NHS Health Check.
